Before mobile phones became widespread, it was the phone booth that made communication possible. In the early years of the telephone, it was expensive and difficult to acquire a personal phone, so it was a great convenience to be able to walk to the corner and use the phone in the green booth.
In 1931, the very first phone booth in Denmark opened, available 24 hours a day. Frosted windows provided the user with some privacy, and the practical steel shelves with a telephone and coin box had space for phone books and a handbag.
In 1935, the green phone booths were introduced. Designed by architect Jens Ingwersen for KTAS, they reflected the simple style of the time. The booth became hugely popular and soon became a familiar sight in all larger Danish provincial towns.
As mobile phones became more common, phone booths gradually disappeared from the streets of Denmark. From 3,000 phone booths in 2007 to just 500 in 2009, the very last phone booth was removed on April 13, 2017, from Lilletorv in Aarhus.
