Volunteers and Dissemination in Focus

Who are We?

Welcome to Experience Center Nyvang! Known until 2021 as Cooperative Village Nyvang.

In the most beautiful surroundings just outside Holbæk, we convey Denmark's history from 1930 to 1959. Over 500 passionate volunteers and a series of old houses and buildings together create an extraordinary experience. We cover about 42 scenic hectares and have over 30 historical houses you can visit.

Why are we called "Nyvang"?

"Nyvang" in Holbæk is first mentioned in a source from 1630. There were problems with the management of the town fields, theft of crops and livestock, and horses breaking out of enclosures. It is actually in connection with the loose animals that Nyvang is mentioned; two horses had broken free and run all the way to Lille Granløse.

The proprietor farm Nyvangsgården comprised 355 acres and was used for agriculture from 1777 to 1965. There was space for 150 dairy cows, 60 young cattle, 18 horses, 10 young horses, foals, and 30 sow pigs with piglets. The farm employed a manager, a feeder, a head farmhand, 2 students, and 10 farmhands. Nyvangsgården had 14 different owners and incredibly, it was never inherited from father to son. The proprietor farm still exists and is now part of the historical environment here at Nyvang.

Acquired and Experience Center

In 1965, the barracks in Holbæk bought the area. Here they could train soldiers. In 1985, the barracks were closed, and the state sold the farm to Holbæk Municipality.

The Experience Center as you know it today was established in 1992. The dream was to create a historical village focusing on the cooperative era – the time that helped create the Denmark we know today. The cooperative era is still an important part of Experience Center Nyvang's identity.

Experience Center Nyvang was known for many years as Cooperative Village Nyvang. Unfortunately, there was a recurring problem of having to refuse people who wanted to sign up for cooperative housing. Therefore, Cooperative Village Nyvang changed its name to Experience Center Nyvang in 2021 and simultaneously updated its graphic identity.

The Independent Institution Experience Center Nyvang today has a professional board, 10-12 full-time employees, and about 600 volunteers. The volunteers are organized into 65 guilds.

The Volunteers – Nyvang's Beating Heart

The Experience at Nyvang

At Nyvang, over 500 volunteers, organized into 65 guilds, bring the experience to life. Their dedication and enthusiasm are the driving forces behind everything we do here at Nyvang.

Every day, more than 50 volunteers are on-site, presenting their respective areas, conducting tours, giving guests rides in horse-drawn carriages or buses, or preparing meals for those on duty.

Life in the Countryside and the Station Town

Our volunteers help bring our village to life, showcasing cooperative history from 1939 to 1950. You can experience daily life with events such as the Fire and Rescue Service responding to emergencies, the shuttle bus transporting guests and residents, and the Cooperative Shop selling classic goods and sweets for your sweet tooth.

At the Pharmacy, pills are rolled for the Hospital, while shirts, ties, and dresses are sold at the Haberdashery. At the Crofter’s Cottage, you can try traditional bread with lard and coffee substitute, Richs. You can also visit our Church, Village School, Community Hall, Bowling Alley, or the Proprietor’s Manor House.

Events

Throughout the season, we host many exciting events for all tastes. Experience the spectacular immersive theater production "Nyvang Occupied", where volunteers and actors depict Denmark during the occupation. Celebrate the harvest with "Harvest at Nyvang", featuring activities for the whole family and numerous stalls to explore. We end the season during the coziest time of year—Christmas. At "Christmas at Nyvang", you can meet Santa’s helpers or hunt for Christmas gifts in the market stalls.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Nyvang Experience Center!

In rainy weather, smaller groups can find shelter for eating their packed lunches in the houses at the Activity Area.

You are very welcome to bring your dog to the area, but it must be kept on a leash.

Dogs are not allowed inside our buildings (service dogs are exempt).
