Together, they create a picture of what a hair salon might have looked like in the 1930s and 1940s. However, at that time, you wouldn’t have had both a men's and women's hairdresser in the same salon. A salon could also be located in the hairdresser's private home. During opening hours, everyone is welcome to visit and have their hair styled with the beautiful waves and curls from the 1940s and 1950s.
In the 1940s, almost all lengths of women's hair were fashionable. The back of the hair was set with combs, and the front was styled in large, soft waves. Women had their hair permed with heat or waved with water, and the hairstyle would last for a few weeks or longer. Men's hair was cut short and styled with hair pomades. From 1946, it became possible for the first time to take the journeyman’s exam as a female hairdresser, something that had long been possible for male barbers. The apprenticeship lasted four years.
