Frederik Madsen’s haulage business at Nyvang is built from timber sourced from Nedre Skov in Tølløse, which was cut at Nyvang’s sawmill. The building is designed to resemble a 1940s haulage company, complete with a garage and auto repair workshop. Attached to the building is an office where, in the old days, customers could book transport, as not everyone had access to a telephone.
The haulage contractor often transported livestock, feed, building materials, and fuel. Being a driver was hard work since loading and unloading were done by hand. Around "shift days"* he would be especially busy moving furniture like dressers and wardrobes between farms. Many haulage contractors also had a small car that functioned as a type of taxi. However, unlike taxis, small cars were required by law to be booked by phone, and they were not allowed to pick up passengers from the street. They had to return to the haulage business before taking new passengers.
*Shift days were the dates when servants (e.g., maids, milkmaids, or farmhands) could change employers. These days fell on May 1st and November 1st each year.
