Nyvang's smallholder farm is a replica of a state-supported smallholding from 1927. It was part of a land allotment from the Løvenborg Estate and operated under a land rent system, with 8 acres of land. The smallholder paid land rent to the state in order to manage the smallholding. The farm was built as a typehouse following guidelines from the State Land Law Committee.
As with the original smallholding from Løvenborg Estate, Nyvang's smallholder farm does not have running water in the kitchen. Water is fetched from a pump in the yard. Heating comes mainly from the kitchen’s wood stove. The barn has space for 2 horses, 6 cattle, and 2 sows with piglets. Outside, you’ll find chickens and geese, as well as goats, which were traditionally raised for slaughter.
A state smallholding is a small farm established with government support in the first half of the 20th century. Most smallholders owned their land, while others were tenants on state-owned land. Following legislation in 1919, smallholdings were sized so that a family could theoretically make a living from them. However, this was often not the case, and smallholders had to supplement their income by working as day laborers on larger farms or as milkmen.
