Telephones became so widespread that it became necessary to establish a proper etiquette for conversations. For example, in the same year, it was recommended that people replace the previous practice of knocking on the microphone with a "hello" when answering a call. By 1918, the Holbæk Central had 27 female telephone operators serving the town's subscribers. The telephone had truly arrived in Holbæk.
