When you visit the hangar at Nyvang, you can see an original Danish-built KZ III ambulance plane, which was introduced into the rescue service by Zonen in 1946. This small plane had space for a stretcher next to the pilot, meaning that the pilot had to both fly the plane and assist the patient at the same time. The restored plane at Nyvang Experience Center is "Fynboen," which was based at the airfield in Beldringe on Funen. The aircraft is a small, light, single-engine plane with an empty weight of 450 kg and a maximum loaded weight of 650 kg. Its cruising speed is 150 km per hour.
In the years following World War II, the Zonen rescue corps supplemented its ambulances with a total of four ambulance planes. This allowed Zonen to transport patients from Denmark’s many small islands. Additionally, they flew whooping cough patients, as the thin air helped relieve their symptoms. The planes also provided aid during harsh winters when supplies ran out on the small islands. The zone ambulance planes flew until the mid-1950s, when they were replaced by helicopters.
