Nyvang's Pharmacy opened in 2022. The furnishings in the pharmacy's dispensary (the room where customers are served) date back to 1905 and come from Vesterborg Pharmacy, which was located on Lolland.
The pharmacy is designed to look as it would have in the 1940s. Pharmacies were essentially production businesses that made the majority of their own medicines. The rest of the items in Nyvang’s Pharmacy (jars, equipment, and machines) have been generously donated by several current and former pharmacies, as well as private individuals.
Vesterborg Pharmacy closed in 1985, and its furnishings were donated to the Danish Pharmaceutical History Foundation, which in 2021 passed them on to Nyvang.
Before the Reformation in 1536, monasteries were responsible for producing and distributing medicine to the sick. After the Reformation, most monasteries disappeared, leaving Denmark without qualified people to make medicine.
In 1546, the king appointed the first pharmacist. It then took 150 years to establish the first 25 pharmacies in Denmark. To run a pharmacy, one had to be granted a license by the king, and later by health authorities.
In 1913, a new pharmacy law ended pharmacists' monopoly on medicine production. The law also revoked their right to sell alcohol.
By 1990, pharmacies in Denmark had completely stopped producing medicine.
Many pharmacies have animal names, such as Lion, Swan, or Elephant. The theory is that in the past, many citizens could not read, so pharmacies displayed a sign with the corresponding animal on their buildings. This way, everyone could find the pharmacy. The animals also symbolized various virtues, like strength or purity.
