The smithy at Nyvang is a partial reconstruction of the Faurbjerg smithy, which originally stood on Tuse Næs. The stone walls are the originals from 1869, while the equipment has been recreated based on original drawings and descriptions. In front of the building stands a well and an old millstone, which is used for ringing wagon wheels. There is also a stone trough for cooling the wheels. The smithy is fully functional and is used for educational purposes when it’s not busy forging horseshoes.
The blacksmith was essential to keeping agriculture running smoothly. He shoed horses, repaired plows, and other iron tools. He also fitted iron rims onto wagon wheels. In most places, being a blacksmith was a full-time job. The blacksmith was often considered a wise man who could solve various problems, such as pulling bad teeth. With the introduction of tractors after World War II, village smithies changed in nature, gradually becoming tractor repair shops and machinery stations.
