Nyvang's Toy Store is set up as a typical shop from the 1940s, with the shopkeeper’s living quarters behind it. The store displays a selection from a private toy collection, and visitors can purchase replicas of old toys. In the living area, you are welcome to sit down and try out the toys. In the children's room, you'll find homemade toys that children of the time could freely play with. In the living room, you’ll see the fine and expensive toys, which were often locked away and only brought out on weekends.
Originally, almost all finished toys were imported from Germany, and there was only a very small production of Danish-made toys. This changed in 1905 when the Danish Parliament* passed a new law requiring inmates in Danish prisons to work. The prison inspector at Vestre Fængsel, S.F. Grundtvig (grandson of N.F.S. Grundtvig), quickly seized the opportunity and initiated the production of wooden toys. This production laid the foundation for the establishment of the Danish Toy Factory, which continued until 1977.
In 1932, the Danish Toy Industry introduced Tekno cars and Tekno construction kits. Tekno became world-famous and was produced until 1972. Lego was founded in 1932 with the production of wooden toys, and in 1949, the first plastic Lego bricks were launched.
*The Danish Parliament, known as Rigsdagen, was the predecessor of today's Folketing. In 1849, the Constitution of Denmark was signed, ending absolute monarchy and establishing a democratic parliament
