Opposite the Village in Nyvang, you’ll find our airplane hangar. Here is an original Danish-built KZ III ambulance plane, which Zonen (the Danish Rescue Corps) deployed in its rescue service in 1946. The small plane had room for a stretcher beside the pilot, meaning the pilot had to both fly the plane and provide assistance to the patient at the same time. The restored plane is named Fynboen and was based at the Beldringe airfield on the island of Funen. It is a small, light, single-engine plane, with an empty weight of 450 kg and a maximum loaded weight of 650 kg. The cruising speed of the plane is 150 km per hour.
In the years following World War II, the Zonen Rescue Corps supplemented its ambulance fleet with a total of four zone ambulance planes. This gave Zonen the ability to retrieve patients from Denmark's many small islands. Additionally, they transported whooping cough patients, as the thin air helped relieve their cough. The planes also provided assistance during harsh winters, when small islands ran out of supplies. The zone ambulance planes flew until the mid-1950s, when they were replaced by helicopters.
