Nyvang's post office is furnished like a small provincial post office from the years following World War II. The original interior has been collected from various post offices. The corridor near the post office is set up like a mail train carriage. In the 20th century, these carriages were attached to regular passenger trains and were called "Bureau Wagons."
Denmark has had a postal service since 1624, but the first rural postmen were only hired permanently in 1860. In the following decades, the number of rural postmen grew, and by around 1900, this system had become nationwide. At the same time, postmen were provided with smart uniforms and caps. Not all villages had a dedicated post office; instead, there were mail drop-off points, which could sometimes be located in the rural postman’s home.
The work of a rural postman was physically demanding. They often had a daily route of between 20 and 30 km, which many had to cover on foot—six days a week. It wasn’t until the late 1930s that the Postal and Telegraph Service purchased bicycles for rural postmen.
